The NGN corridors Pulse watches — and why

The Nigerian naira moves more money than most people realise. Over $20 billion in remittances flow into Nigeria annually — the largest recipient in sub-Saharan Africa. Every dollar, pound, dirham, and yuan that becomes naira passes through a corridor that the major FX data providers barely cover and that most signal engines completely ignore.

Pulse watches six of them closely.

PairWhy it matters
USDNGN=XThe benchmark. CBN policy anchor. Moves everything else.
GBPNGN=XUK diaspora — largest single remittance corridor into Nigeria.
USDGHS=XGhana cedi. West African economic bellwether, moves with commodity exports.
USDKES=XKenya shilling. East Africa anchor, key for M-Pesa linked flows.
USDEGP=XEgyptian pound. North Africa gateway, significant Arab League trade flows.
USDSAR=XSaudi riyal. Gulf-Nigeria corridor — diaspora and oil revenue linked.

Why global quant funds don't cover them

The short answer is liquidity and data quality. Most algorithmic trading infrastructure is built around instruments where you can move size — EUR/USD, S&P futures, US Treasuries. The NGN corridors are thin by comparison, data feeds are patchy, and the drivers are local: CBN intervention windows, fuel subsidy changes, port congestion, political calendars.

"The alpha in thin markets isn't hidden. It's just not where the big funds are looking."

That's the gap Pulse is built for. We don't need to move $500 million. We need to call the direction of USDNGN over the next four hours well enough to be useful to a treasury desk managing FX exposure, or a remittance operator deciding when to convert.

What drives corridor moves

These pairs respond to a different set of signals than G10 forex. The features Pulse weights most heavily for NGN corridors include: CBN intervention signals (official rate bands, parallel market spread), oil price momentum (Nigeria's USD earnings are oil-denominated), EMFX risk-off sentiment (broad EM sell-offs hit NGN disproportionately), and remittance seasonality (December and Ramadan see structural inflow spikes).

The model learns these patterns. Every signal comes with SHAP attribution so you can see exactly which features drove the call — not just a number, but a reason.
